Guide to Taylor (Crouse-Hinds) Breakers

Taylor breakers, often associated with Crouse-Hinds / Taylor Electrical systems, are an older style of breaker used in Canadian residential and light commercial panels. These systems were commonly installed in mid-20th century homes before being discontinued and absorbed through various industry changes, including later connections to Eaton and other manufacturers.

Taylor panels use a bolt on style breaker design model numbers CGHQ or CGQ that is specific to their own bus bar system. Breakers are not interchangeable with modern Eaton, Square D, or Siemens breakers, even if they may look similar.

Identification is usually done by checking the panel label, which will indicate Taylor or Crouse-Hinds, along with the breaker model series inside the panel door.

There are no modern direct equivalents, so replacements typically require finding compatible NOS (new old stock) breakers or approved retrofit solutions, depending on availability and local electrical code requirements.
